Prof. Warnapala leads Lankan delegation to NAM parley Deputy Foreign Minister Prof. Viswa Warnapala will lead the Sri Lankan delegation to the XIV Ministerial Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement which will be held at the International Convention Centre in Durban, South Africa from August 17 to 19. Sri Lanka has won honour from the International community for being a founder member of the Non-Aligned Movement, which has its origin in the Asia/Africa Conference in Bandung in 1955. This conference was convened at the invitation of the Prime Ministers of Burma, Sri Lanka, India, Indonesia and Pakistan and was attended by 29 States. Although more than four decades have passed since the first summit, the majority of NAM members continue to be in the category of least developed or developing countries. A scientific analysis of the whole international situation will reveal, that the shift from a bi-polar to a multi-polar world at the end of the Cold War has not helped ease the tensions in certain quarters of the world. The Foreign Ministers of the Non-Aligned Countries who will gather in Durban, South Africa will pave the way for significant contributions for the forward march of this movement. Political analysts believe that they will search for new ways and means of easing political tensions in Middle East and other parts of the world. |
