Appointments to 2,611 trained teachers The Education Ministry has given appointments to the new batch of 2,611 trained teachers who passed out from National Education Colleges this year, giving priority to ease cadre shortage in difficult area schools and national schools. An Education Ministry release stated that 55.3 per cent Sinhala medium teachers of this new batch received schools in their residing areas while 68.7 per cent received placements to schools in their first or second choice of place. Of Tamil medium teachers, 59.3 per cent received schools in residing areas and 74.5 per cent their first or second choice of place. A total of 693 Tamil medium teachers passed out from Education Colleges this year. "We wanted to fulfil two objectives through our new placement strategy. One is to make sure, that teachers receive appointments to their place of choice to ensure a better service. Secondly to give priority to fill the vacancies existing in the remote/difficult schools and national schools," an Education Ministry spokesperson said. "The shortage of teachers in national schools swelled during the last two years since the previous Government stopped recruiting Education College diploma holders to National schools." The situation has become worse as there had not been any new recruitment, even of other type teachers to fill the vacancies during this period. According to the release, the selections had been made using a special computer software based on the number of vacancies for each subject in the relevant province and their performance levels. The Ministry states that they have attended to ease the shortage of teachers in 324 national schools including 70 Tamil medium schools. |
