President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga will meet Ceylon Petroleum Corporation (CPC) Trade Union leaders on Tuesday to discuss the trade union dispute in the presence of Power and Energy Minister Susil Premajayantha who is away from the country.

Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama attended an emergency meeting last night where CPC Chairman Jaliya Medagama and acting Power and Energy Minister Kumara Welgama said the Government was committed to the concept that CPC should not be privatised.

The union leaders were keen to meet the President immediately but the Finance Minister said the President expressed the view that it was best when the Minister concerned was present.

"The President will meet them on Tuesday along with Minister Susil Premajayantha who is now away on official business. The CPC Chairman requested the employees to return to work until Tuesday when the problem could very likely be settled," Dr. Amunugama added.

CPC Trade Unions launched a lightening strike yesterday in protest of what they said was a move to sell out 33 per cent of shares to an Indian Company, an All Ceylon Trade Union Federation press release said.

Medagama told Rupavahini last night that there was no reason for the public to panic about the scarcity of petrol and diesel. However, he advised the public to use diesel and patrol sparingly as the international situation was not favourable at present.
