The Deputy Minister has reached this decision following an extensive discussion with 26 trade unions of the Survey Department, a Ministry spokesman told the Daily News yesterday. Both the Survey Department and the private sector conduct Government surveying activities. The trade union representatives have pointed out to the Deputy Minister that the Survey Department has the ability to conduct all Government surveys at low cost. The representatives have also told the Deputy Minister that private sector involvement in Government survey works shows a lack of coordination between the Survey Department and Government institutions. Meanwhile, the Government has decided to recruit all surveying science graduates of the Sabaragamuwa University into the permanent cadre of the Survey's Department under the graduate employment program. According to ministry sources there are 92 graduates who have completed degrees in surveying science at the Sabaragamuwa University. Therefore, the recruitment of these graduates into the Survey Department will help the department to conduct its activities in a more efficient manner. Deputy Minister Ratnayake has also directed the Survey Department officials to take steps to print atlas books which had been stopped by the former UNF Government. The Deputy Minister has taken these initiatives to provide more accurate and scientific atlas books to students. |
