The Government yesterday decided to allocate funds to pay the outstanding salaries of CTB cluster bus company employees. Transport Ministry sources told the Daily News that the decision was taken following a discussion between Transport Minister Felix Perera and Treasury officials where the present crisis situation in cluster bus companies was taken up. "The non-payment of salaries to CTB cluster company officials gave rise to a series of strikes and various other problems in recent times. However, at yesterday's discussion the Treasury decided to make the payments within the next three weeks," the spokesman said. Meanwhile, a Cabinet Committee has been set up to inquire into problems regarding the appointment of new director boards in cluster companies. It was reported that the newly appointed directors in certain cluster companies are unable to take over their duties owing to pressure by certain union leaders. The shortage of funds to pay salaries affected these cluster companies as well since the Treasury had allocated funds only for those where the director board commenced duties. "But even these companies will receive funds in line with yesterday's decision," he said. The funds required for the payment of employee salaries in cluster bus companies alone is around Rs. 300 million. |
