President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday instructed the political authorities in the Central Province to construct a new hospital in Nuwara Eliya and to develop the hospitals at Matale, Dambulla, Nuwara Eliya, Rikillagaskada and Walapane on a priority basis using funds allocated for health development in the province. The President made these observations when the development plan for the Central Provincial Council was discussed yesterday at the President's House with the participation of Ministers, Deputy Ministers and Provincial Ministers from the Central Provincial Council. This was the first of a series of discussions to be held focusing on the new provincial development plans. The President was of the opinion that development undertaken by Provincial Councils should be done directly targeting the people and under better plans, a press release issued by the Presidential Secretariat said yesterday. At this meeting plans for the improvement of education, health, highways and the agriculture sector in the Central Province were discussed at length and the President instructed the political authorities to target those plans to obtain the maximum benefits. The President discussed the health development plan for the Central Provincial Council at length at this discussion. The necessity for producing seed paddy and vegetable seeds the farms managed by the Provincial Agricultural Ministries was stressed at this meeting. The President also pointed out the possibilities of setting up new projects on ornamental plants, and improving those projects into export oriented ones under Provincial Agriculture Ministries. Steps have already been taken to offer a maximum price for the dairy farmers for their products. Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama, Estate Infrastructure Development Minister C. B. Ratnayake, Power and Energy Deputy Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, Governor of the Central Provincial Council Monty Gopallawa, Chief Minister Sarath Ekanayake and Provincial Ministers and Ministry officials participated at this discussion. |
