$70,000 scholarship program to empower women in IT sector

by Anjana Samarasinghe

The Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology (SLIIT) together with Cisco Systems Networking Academy and the United States Agency of International Development (USAID) have granted 70,000 US$ on the new scholarship program to empower Sri Lankan women in the IT sector.

Fifty Scholarships were awarded on August 6 at SLIIT Colombo. The new scholarship program "Women In Technology" (WIT) is targeted to train women to design, build and maintain computer networks and to prepare them to earn industry standard certification as networking professionals upon graduation.

Managing Director/CEO of SLIIT Lalith B. Gamage told the Daily News that compared to other South Asian countries Sri Lanka's IT industry has an elevated status. Scholarship programs such as WIT will help develop the IT sector further.

Another 16 scholarships were given to women in Jaffna recently. We hope to commence our project in the Southern Province too, he said.

These scholarships were offered to women in different parts of the country who work in various institutes, he said. Selection is based on financial needs as well as each applicant's potential to contribute to the field of information technology, and her interest in serving as a mentor to other women and girls in the field of IT.

This is a one-year training program. All classes will be conducted and administered by SLIIT and the scholars will face an examination at the end of the training program, he said.
