Domestic airlines increase airfare to Jaffna by Ramani Kangaraarachchi All domestic airlines operating from Colombo to Jaffna have increased their airfare from August 9 as a result of increased fuel prices. There are three domestic flight operators in the country namely Lion Air, Serendib and Expo Aviation. Lion Air and Expo have revised their airfare to Rs. 9,000 for a return ticket to Jaffna, an increase of Rs. 500. The two companies operate two flights a day on a code share basis at present while Serendib is not operational as their aircraft are under repairs. The Chairman of Lion Air Chandran Ratnam said that they were compelled to increase the airfare due to the surcharge of the increased fuel price. He said that there is an upward trend in bookings and flights were fully booked from last month up to now, mostly with businessmen and foreign expatriates. Lion Air is in the process of purchasing two new smaller aircraft to cater to the tourist season shortly which will operate from Colombo to Weerawila, Ampara, Trincomalee and Sigiriya, Ratnam said. |
