Kenny-Chef de Mission Olympic Games

by Richard Dwight

Joseph Kenny's appointment as Chef de Mission, of the Sri Lanka contingent to the 2004 Athens Olympics, was on for a moment, then off the next moment and, now happily resolved to be on again.

These intervening days of speculation were trying, and Kenny faced it with equanimity, sans bitterness or malice. Deeply touched was he, by the sustained faith and trust reposed in him by the members of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) and its President, Hemasiri Fernando and, equally heartened and encouraged by the support extended to him by a very concerned family and friends.

The-58-year old Joseph Kenny, had both his primary as well as his secondary education at St. Benedict's College, where he excelled as a gymnast, doing well in the classroom too.

With time water sports took hold of him, with a penchant for sailing as a Yachtsman, and lived up to his reputation winning two medals at the Asian games, which is one of the premier games in the region. Kenny has represented Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth Sailing Regatta held in Bombay and, on the local scene has won many national trophies and currently holds the lowest handicap, that puts him in the top category of sailors in Sri Lanka.

He has displayed organizing and administrative ability of high order, which is seen by his being the president of the Yachting Association of Sri Lanka (YASL) for eight years, the Commodore of the Ceylon Motor Yacht Club (CMYC) for three years and commodore of the Royal Colombo Yacht Club (RCYC) for three years.

Presently Kenny is the Secretary of the YASL, Commodore of CMYC, Committee member of the RCYC and member of the NOC for the past seven years.

During his YASL Presidency he promoted a new class of boats (Optimist) for children between the ages of 10-14 and has been instrumental in importing 20 new boats from Singapore and China, which has assisted the children to take part in international meets and win some events. He has also assisted the NOC in many of their projects and currently involved with the computerization of the NOC with other affiliated associations.

Kenny attended the Chefs de Mission seminar held from the 21st - 25th August 2003, with regard to the forthcoming Olympic Games 2004 and submitted a report on the outcome of the seminar to the NOC, on the duties and work to be done by the Chefs de Mission.

In the work a day life, Joseph Kenny, is the Executive Director Free Lanka Trading Company Ltd., a group which commands over 20,000 employees. Endowed with pleasing ways and a genial outlook, Kenny is a witty post prandial speaker - a devout Catholic to be God fearing, happily married to Indra with a son and daughter, who are in Australia.
