Maritime organisation praises security network at Port

by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi

The security measures implemented in the Ports of Sri Lanka under the Ship and Port Security Code had come in for high praise of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO).

IMO Secretary General Mitro Poulas expressed his satisfaction about the security network when he met the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) Chairman Dileepa Wijesundara and Navy Commander Vice Admiral Daya Sandagiri in Great Britain recently.

A Ports and Aviation Ministry spokesman said the ISPS Security Code is in force throughout the world. The SLPA Chairman and the Navy Commander flew to Britain on Ports and Aviation Minister Mangala Samaraweera's instructions to make the IMO aware of the progress of the present steps taken under the ISPS Code in Sri Lanka Ports and to receive instructions to improve further.

The spokesman said the competent authority - Sri Lanka Navy is working in collaboration with SLPA to provide security to Colombo, Galle, Trincomallee and Kankesanturai Ports. IMO General Secretary had told the two Sri Lankan delegates that Great Britain too is implementing an ISPS Code similar to Sri Lanka.

Wijesundara had brought to IMO Secretary General's notice that under the new security network, steps have been taken to commence a program to scan all containers.

The Sri Lankan delegates also visited the Felixtowe Port considered as one of the premier ports in the world and studied the modern methods of providing security to ships and ports. Felixtowe Port Authorities had pledged support to improve the prevailing structure for ports and ships in Sri Lanka. They had a discussion with the premier shipping insurers Lloyds of London regarding similar issues.
