Five year plan to uplift education in WP - Chief Minister

Bulathsinhala spl. corr.

Western Province Chief Minister who is also the Minister of Education Reginald Cooray said in Horana that spending millions of rupees, selected principals were sent abroad for special training and almost all the principals in the province were given five-day training in school management but it had been an utter wastage of public money as there was no satisfactory output showed towards the development of the school.

He was addressing the principals of Horana, Bandaragama and Bulathsinhala Education Divisions held at the auditorium of Horana Zonal Education Office recently.

The Chief Minister also said, 'WP is spending millions of rupees on principals and teacher training. If the output of the training is nil, it is a wastage of money. We have supplied teachers with note books to write lesson notes, but I came to know 90 per cent of teachers don't write lesson notes. Some sort of punishment should also be given to such teachers.'

'With the new Provincial Council, there should be a five year plan to develop schools. So I appeal all principals to produce their five-year plan before the 10th of next month.

He also said, 'for the benefit of schoolchildren in WP, a new radio station will be started soon, and children in backward areas also will be able to join in these programmes.

'From next year principals and teachers who were in one school for more than ten years will be transferred for the benefit of them and the school.

Dikson J. Perera, Director of Education, WP, said that when we analysed the GCE (OL) results of schools in Horana in 2002 and 2003 the result was very poor and there was no improvement in teaching of all the subjects in GCE classes.
