Thirteenth Annual Academic Sessions of Sri Lanka College of Microbiologists

Sri Lanka doctor in Hong Kong who isolated the SARS virus Prof. Malik Peiris will be in Colombo next week to participate at the Thirteenth Annual Academic Sessions of the Sri Lanka College of Microbiologists.

Prof. Peiris who will be the chief guest at the sessions will deliver the keynote address on "Confronting Emerging Infections.

The Sessions will be inaugurated at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute in Colombo on August 12.

Dr. Sujatha Mananwatte in a statement to the Daily News said: The academic sessions will go on till August 14 at the ALDO Castellani Auditorium of the Medical Research Institute at Colombo 8. A Guest Speaker at the annual academic sessions will be Prof. Pradeep Seth, of the Department of Microbiology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi. He is also the visiting professor in the department of microbiology at University of California. He will address on "HIV vaccine development".

The academic sessions will consist of free paper sessions, plenary lectures, seminars and symposia. The free paper sessions will cover the areas on Virology. Parasitology, Bacteriology, Mycology, and Molecular Biology.

In addition this year, sessions will address the issues on strengthening microbiological services in hospitals, cardiac and pericardiac infection, antibiotic and antiviral use, molecular diagnostics, HIV infections and several other aspects of infectious diseases.

Launching of the official website of the Sri Lanka College of Microbiologists will be an important event at the inauguration.

The office bearers of the Sri Lanka College of Microbiologists are: Dr. Sujatha Mananwatte (President), Dr. Ranjith Perera (President elect) Dr. Gaya Colombage (Vice President), Dr. Nelun de Silva (Immediate Past President), Dr. Rohan Chinniah and Dr. Sunethra Gunasena (Joint Secretaries) Dr. Rukmal Seneviratne (Treasurer), Dr. Enoka Corea (Editor) and the council members are: Prof. Vasanthi Thevanesam, Prof. Manel Wijesundara, Prof. Sirimalie Fernando, Dr. Preethi Perera, Dr. Kumudu Karunaratne, Dr. Philomina Chandrasiri and Dr. Geethani Wickramasinghe.
