The Road Development Authority (RDA) will construct a series of flyover bridges in several industrial hubs in and around Colombo aimed at reducing traffic congestion in the metropolis. RDA Chairman M.M.C Ferdinando told the Daily News that flyover bridges will be built in Nugegoda, Orugodawatta, Pannipitiya, Rajagiriya and Gampaha. "We have identified these places as spots where traffic congestion is at its worst. The proposed flyover at the Nugegoda junction on the High Level Road which is a four lane bridge is estimated to cost around Rs 800 million while the Orugodawatta flyover is estimated to cost around Rs 550 million," Ferdinando said. The proposed flyovers in Nugegoda, Orugodawatta and near Parliament Road in Rajagiriya will be large-scale, consolidated projects while those in Gampaha and Pannipitiya (a two lane bridge) would be minor projects for which tenders have already been awarded. The RDA recently completed the construction of a similar flyover in Ragama at Rs 200 million facilitating the smooth flow of traffic at the Ragama railway crossing. "Construction work of all these projects except the Nugegoda flyover will start within this year," the Chairman said. |
