Charity supports dairy project in Akkaraipattu

Moratuwa special correspondent

The British charity Hope for Children has given its support for the extension of the homestead dairies project implemented by the Foundation of Rural Economic Development (FORED) in Akkaraipattu. The project is designed for widows with children. The scheme which was supported by the charity began with eighteen widows with a contribution from the partner agency.

Forty three will now be engaged in the enterprise while children in the family will have a glass of milk and the surplus is sold for income support.

The charity under this project titled 'Sasreeka' has also supported the commencement of two income generation schemes one at Vinayagapuram and the other at Iyankerney both managed by Koinonia in Batticaloa.

Two other income generation schemes supported by the charity are at Trincomalee managed by the Trincomalee Islamic Development Society and another at Pulmoddai managed by the Social Development Foundation. Another scheme operates to help street women through the Day Shelter for Street Children, Borella managed by Sarvodaya. A group of coastal belt women also have been helped to strengthen their micro enterprise.

A spokesman of the charity told the Daily News that the schemes are making satisfactory progress.
