Anticipatory bail application of former Dept. of Registration of persons Commissioner refused

The Colombo Chief Magistrate and Additional District Judge Ms. Sarojini Kusala Weerawardena yesterday refused an anticipatory bail application of the former Commissioner of the Department of Registration of persons Vijaya Ranasinghe.

Inspector Shani Abeysekera of the CID filing a further report in connection with their investigation into the issue of forged national identity cards to the LTTE woman suicide bomber and her accomplice objected to the suspect being released on anticipatory bail and said that if the suspect is released on bail the public will rise against the authorities as the alleged offence is of a very serious nature.

After lengthy submissions by the CID and President's Counsel D.P. Kumarasinghe, Senior Counsel for the former Commissioner, the Judge refused to grant the anticipatory bail application of Ranasinghe.

The four suspects who are alleged to have issued a forged national identity card to the LTTE woman suicide bomber case and her accomplice refused an application for bail and re-remanded them till August 16.

The Criminal Investigation Department probing the bomb blast at the Kollupitiya police station yesterday filing a further report before court said that the files pertaining to the issuing of forged national identity cards are missing from the office.

The report further stated that several employers including senior employees attached to the national indenty card office are also have been involved in issuing forged national identity cards.

Earlier Inspector Shani Abeysekera objected to the four suspects being released on bail as the investigations into the matter is not yet completed.

Over 34 employees of the National Identity card office had been questioned in connection with their investigations, Inspector Abeysekera told court.

On an application by the CID, the Judge further remanded the four suspects till August 16. They are Mohamed A. Refideen of Maradana, K. Kularathna Fernando of Mount Lavinia, Mohamed Mubrak Mohamed Rizwaan of Panadura and Indrajith Nandana Karunanayake of Veyangoda.

The four suspects are alleged to have issued a forged national identity card to the LTTE woman suicide bomber and her accomplice, Sathyaleela Selvakumar.

Ajith Pathirana, Jayantha Dias Nanayakkara and Sanjey Gamage appeared for the suspects.

The CID investigations revealed that the woman suicide bomber had been brought to Colombo by several men who are members of the LTTE to assassinate EPDP leader Douglas Devananda.

Investigations directed by CID DIG Lionel Gunatilleke and conducted by Senior SP D. S. Y. Samaratunge revealed that several employees at the NIC office are alleged to have been involved in the issuing of forged identity cards at exorbitant prices.
