Moneragala special correspondent Senior Superintendent of Police, M. U. Sheriffdeen addressing policemen and women of all ranks at the Moneragala Community Hall stressed the need to maintain a high degree of discipline in the course of discharging their official duties as well as in their private lives. A policeman should be ashamed of being overpowered by gangsters or other high minded lawbreakers by his inability to make good use of the legal empowerment he is blessed within the matter of using minimum force to maintain law and order. Nowhere in our law books has the subject of "minimum force" been specifically defined and only the well disciplined policeman can put it to good use. He cannot eat humble pie if he is conscious of this privilege empowered by law and contribute his mite towards holding cherished traditions of maintaining law and order and safeguarding his personal dignity," the SSP said. Citing specific instances of the integrity in the police he gave descriptions of dangerous situations he was able to overcome through disciplined approaches and exhorted all to be courageous and brave and not let thugs and gangsters overpower them or hold them to ransom. They must always strive to maintain their dignity as well as bring honour to the establishment. They should never permit thugs and gangsters to dictate terms to them in the discharge of their duties that must be executed without fear or favour. They can truly serve the national cause by extending their devoted services to all sections of the public in safeguarding persons and property acting without fear or favour. The SSP also emphasised that supervisory officers should refrain from taking drastic steps in the case of policemen involved in minor lapses without first the opportunity to make good and overcome lapses. |
