Colombo National Hospital a den of vice and corruption

The Colombo National Hospital (CNH) has turned into a den of vice and corruption with visitors to this premier hospital being placed at the mercy of drug addicts and other undesirable elements calling into question the security at the establishment.

The Daily News witnessed several visitors to the hospital being harassed and intimidated by these elements comparing a sizeable portion of minor staff invariably forcing the visitors to part with their money to gain entry to the wards.

Security lapses at the hospital also have provided a clear field for certain minor staff of the hospital and even drug addicts to fleece visitors in the guise of providing extra passes.

CNH's Deputy Director (Accident Service) Dr. Anil Jasinghe last week caught red handed a former hospital employee who had taken money from a family from Galle promising an extra pass to visit a patient at the Accident Service.

The hospital issues only two passes for one patient.

The employee had been interdicted on disciplinary grounds at the CNH, Police said. Upon Dr. Jasinghe's intervention both the ex-employee and the visitor who handed the money, taken into police custody and remanded. Dr. Jasinghe told the Daily News that security lapses at the hospital had caused severe problems.

The security is handled by a private firm. "We are planning to take every possible step to prevent such incidents in the future,"Dr. Jasinghe said. He said stern action will be taken against those responsible for such acts.
