Committee to review present A/L evaluation structure

by Manjula Fernando

The Ministry of Education will shortly appoint a committee to explore the possibility of doing away with the present A/L curriculum which divides the subjects into four streams viz. Maths, Science, Commerce and Arts.

Appeals Commissioner A. M. R. B. Amarakoon who represented the Education Ministry at a press conference held at the National Testing and Evaluation Centre at Battaramulla yesterday said the ministry expects to initiate a dialogue inviting opinions from different sections of society on this issue.

"President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga's vision for Education is to produce noble and worthy citizens that effectively contribute to the development of the country while meeting the challenges of globalisation." "The committee will also be required to review the present evaluation structure of the GCE Advanced Level and look into the possibility of easing the heavy burden on students.

"The GCE A/L curriculum when it was first introduced in the 1960s had a field of only 19 subjects. This was gradually increased to 33 in 1965, 40 in 1971, 44 in 1992, 50 in 2001, 52 in 2002 and now the subject volume has swelled to 54," Amarakoon said.
