More qualify for university admission this year

by Manjula Fernando

Over 15,000 more GCE Advanced Level students have qualified for university admission this year, with 108,357 students achieving entrance pass mark and above, against 93,286 last year.

The students have comparatively performed well in the 2004 examination although there was a drop of 10,000 candidates sitting the exam this year than last year, Examinations Commissioner General Mahinda Wijayasiri told a media conference at the Examinations Department yesterday.

Wijayasiri said: "The GCE A/L examination is not merely an university selection exam, but a very crucial turning point for school leavers entering the job market. It also serves as a placement test to qualify for professional exams."

"There were 2,750 (1.38 per cent) students with three A passes this year, compared to the 2,569 last year. A total of 111,675 has passed all three subjects, against the 96,696 in 2003."

"However, nearly 10 per cent of students, 19,990 have failed all three subjects," the Commissioner General said.

A total of 240,707 private and school candidates applied to sit for the 2004 A/L examination, but according to the Department, only 199,937, including 28,781 private candidates sat the examination conducted from May 6 to 31.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) will entertain applications for university admissions from A/L qualified students from August 12 to September 3.

The Z-score cut off mark which determines the intake to individual faculties will be issued by the UGC by December 10.

UGC Chairman Prof. Ranjith Mendis told reporters that they have doubled the university intake for IT courses this year with an additional 290 placements in four universities for IT and computer engineering.

"We have made arrangements to issue the university entrance guide books and the application forms to all bookshops by August 12. The deadline for applications is September 3," Prof. Mendis said.

Students will be admitted to follow two new courses on Nursing and Health Promotion at the Sri Jayawardhanapura University Medical Faculty and Rajarata University Medical Faculty.

The Chairman said they plan to commence admissions to all universities by late December and conclude by February 2005 except for few individual faculties including the Sri Jayawardhanapura Management Faculty and the Colombo Arts.

Former Exams Commissioner General A.M.R.B. Amarakoon and Examinations Commissioner Anura Edirisinghe were also present.
