Over 600 delegates to participate in ICT Summit and Exhibition

Over 600 delegates representing the ICT sectors and governments of over 23 countries will gather in Colombo to participate in workshops, conferences and exhibitions at the BMICH and the Convention Centre from November 30 to December 5. This event, the ASOCIO ICT Summit and Exhibition, is one of the largest of its kind and Sri Lanka has been chosen as the venue for this year, the 20th anniversary of ASOCIO (Asian-Oceanian Computing Industry Organisation).

ASOCIO is a regional ICT body inaugurated in Japan in 1984 with six member countries and has now grown to a nineteen-member body, further strengthened by five guest members. ASOCIO members represent over 10,000 companies in Japan, Australia, Bangladesh, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Nepal, New Zealand, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, UK, USA, Canada, France and Spain.

A highlight of ASOCIO 2004 will be the ministerial dialogue to which the ICT ministers of member countries have been invited. This event is expected to be the largest event of its kind in Colombo since the non-aligned summit in the 1970s.

ASOCIO ICT Summit 2004 is hosted and organised by a consortium of industry associations led by the Federation of Information Technology Industry Societies (FITIS), a grouping of trade associations in Sri Lanka that include the Sri Lanka Computer Vendors Association (SLCVA), the Sri Lanka Association for the Software Industry (SLASI) and the Association of Computer Training Organisations (ACTOS).

Partnering FITIS in the effort to organise and host the ASOCIO ICT Summit 2004 are the Software Exports Association (SEA), the Sri Lankan chapter of the British Computer Society (BCS), the Computer Society of Sri Lanka (CSSL) and the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA). The ASOCIO ICT Summit 2004 is funded and underwritten by the Infotel Lanka Society, an institution specialising in the organising of trade and professional exhibitions and seminars to support the ICT industry in Sri Lanka.

Government sanction and support for the event is channelled through the ICT Agency (KCTA). The Board of Investment (BOI) and the Sri Lanka Convention Bureau (SLCB).

The ASOCIO ICT Exhibition to be held concurrently will cover areas such as Enterprise Solutions, Web Services, Info Security and Disaster Recovery, Network Infrastructure and Services, Digital Imaging, Data Storage, Office Automation and Documentation. The exhibition will also focus on the key segments of growth within the ICT Industry such as eGovernance, ICT enabled services and BPO Technology for Apparel Sector, Societal Applications and Wireless Technology.

Approximately 300 of the 600 delegates expected for ASOCIO 2004 will be from ASOCIO member countries and the organisers have doubled their exhibit space capacity to accommodate 60 international and over 200 local exhibitors of products and services.
