Ornamental ponds with different characters at Elephant corridor Water gardens minus the fountains to follow the landscaping of King Kassayappa at the "Elephant Corridor" hotel, Sigiriya, in a jungle plain in the shadow of the icon Sigiriya. A team of gardeners from the area, directed by Consultants, Environmental Executive Suranga Wewegedera and garden supervisor Mangala Attapattu have zeroed in on the aspects of watergardening at the hotel "Elephant Corridor". Unlike the creator of Sigiriya, they have not made fountains and moats, instead they have concentrated on giving special and individual character to the twenty four ornamental ponds the hotel has in its two hundred acre ground, to cater to its twenty one suites. The one of a kind hotel, bordered by four fairly large ancient tanks has five water holes within its premises, which have their own particular character and ecosystem as well. The hotel, which has not cut any trees during construction and has maintained its naturescape by not adding any flora which is not indigenous to the area, has no fences and plays host to a variety of wildlife, both large and small. In fact a sanctuary for them all, added to by the no motorized vehicles in the premises policy. Nature and luxury find harmony where suites are four times the size of an average five star room and have private plunge pools, terrace and garden in everyone of them. No outside buildings are to be seen in any direction and one is truly lord of what one surveys at the "Elephant Corridor", which is now having signs of leopard movement and is in the process of making its premises a feline sanctuary under the guidance of a few of the best wildlife experts in the country. All four varieties of wild cats of Sri Lanka, the leopard, the fishing cat, the jungle cat and the rusty spotted cat use and move across the premises and in some cases feel comfortable enough to breed within them. |
