Nine killed in tunnel collapse

NEW DELHI, Tuesday (AFP)

At least nine people were killed and 10 injured when a tunnel they were digging collapsed in the tiny northern Indian state of Uttaranchal, an official said Tuesday.

Local district official Puneet Kansal told Aaj Tak television news channel that 50 to 60 labourers were working in the tunnel late Monday when earth started falling from the roof.

"Some people came out when the loose earth started falling but others stayed behind," he said, adding that the exact number of casualties had yet to be determined.
