Ananda have the edge over Vidyartha Ananda College will be hoping to maintain their impressive run this season when they take on the traditional rivals Vidyartha College Kandy in the second leg of their annual inter school rugby encounter for the William Gopallawa Shield at the CR and FC grounds, Longden Place today. This years match has great significance because the two schools have decided to play the second leg after a lapse of 16 years. This is also the second oldest inter school match played for a shield and it was started way back in 1968. The Anandians of course will go in as the favourites to win the match having taken the first leg by 13 points to nil in Kandy. Ananda have just completed the Singer inter school rugby tournament successfully where they recorded three good victories from six outings. The last years 'B' division league champions have made steady progress and have performed extremely well to finish in the fourth place of the final points table. The Anandians have enjoyed another successful season where they defeated some of the more fancied teams and have also qualified for the knock out tournament. Vidyartha College too have experienced mixed fortunes in the current inter school rugby season but have failed to make an impact with their young outfit. This time they are up against another tough side and face a daunting task to restrict the powerful Anandians. (C.D). |
