Grand double for Chamil at Lectra Monthly Medal by Kandy sports correspondent at Rajawella Sixteen year old student from Ecole International School Chamil Wickremasinghe playing to a handicap of 16 carried away the men's senior title and the boys junior title to complete a grand double at the opening month's competition of the Lectra Monthly Medal Golf Championship organised by the Victoria Golf and Country Resort and sponsored by the Lectra Apparel Technologies and worked at the Victoria Golf Course at Rajawella. A near drought conditions prevailed at Victoria and Chamil Wickremasinghe excelled by getting a fine score of 63, a clear win over J.J. Ambani who got 71 and played to a handicap of 15. Tieing for the fourth spot with 72 nett each were Priath Fernando (Handicap 8), and Roshan Dias (Handicap 28). The runner-up berth went to another schoolboy from the Gateway International School Sidath Hemachandra who carded 70 playing to a handicap of 20. His twin brother Sampath Hemachandra too excelled with a good 73 nett. Usha de Silva making her appearance at Victoria and playing to a handicap of 12 won the ladies event with a nett score of 69 and excellent under the dry conditions which prevailed. But she was closely followed by last year's Grand Prix winner Niloo Jayatillake and her sister Anusha Senadeera who both got 70 nett Regular participant Tibbline got 71 nett and Sue Rao 72. What gruelling contest it turned out to be between the 'deadlier of the species' as a mere three points separated these five lady golfers. Long haired Ravana Perera won the Mini Junior nine hole competition with 33 nett playing to a handicap of 23 followed by Rudrani with 34 with the former winning after a tense battle. This meet was organised by the Director General Manger Tony Witham together with Lalindra Ranaweera, Mrs. Susie Dias, Caddie Master Peter Perera and Course Manger J. Bulumulla. The Chairman of Lectra Apparel Technologies Rohan de Silva said that they are once again happy to sponsor this monthly golf championship which has seen the emergence of many a young golfer. |
