Government ready for peace talks :

UPFA says 'no' to LTTE's ISGA proposals

by Gamini Bandaranayake

The United People's Freedom Alliance Government is not ready to go for Peace talks on the basis of the LTTE's ISGA proposals, President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga emphasised addressing the UPFA Executive Council Meeting held at the President's House, on Monday, August 02.

River Basing Development Minister and the SLFP General Secretary Maitripala Sirisena said that the President who chaired the EXCO meeting attended by representatives of all the constituent parties of the Freedom Alliance, had informed them that the UPFA has not changed its original stand in respect of the LTTE's ISGA proposals and also agreed to make an announcement to the public clarifying the UPFA Government's position.

President Kumaratunga in her address to the members of the EXCO recalled the several people friendly measures adopted by her Government within the past few months and said that provision of employment to unemployed graduates, restoration of 1000 irrigational tanks and provision of a variety of facilities to Samurdhi beneficiaries were some of the major tasks fulfilled by her government.

The JVP present at this meeting requested the President to clarify to the public the manner of selecting appointees under the programme of providing employment to unemployed graduates as there were several criticisms from various quarters on this issue.

The members present at this meeting further agreed to meet the Executive Council once in every six weeks to discuss and review the progress made and appoint a Committee of Review comprising Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse, Rural Industries Minister K. V. Lal Kantha, Trade and Commerce Deputy Minister Sunil Handunnetti, Labour and Employment Minister Athauda Seneviratne and Finance Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama.
