The Japanese Government granted a backhoe loader valued Rs. 4.5 million to the Colombo Municipal Council for its "Project for Improvement of Sanitation in Urban Poor Settlement in Colombo". The project is to prevent spreading of communicable diseases such as dengue and filaria and to improve the sanitation of urban poor. The Colombo Municipal Council has been implementing a community awareness and vector control programme in collaboration with the World Health Organization (WHO). To accelerate the activities and to encourage the efforts of the Colombo Municipal Council, the Japanese Government has provided grant assistance to purchase a Backhoe Loader (JCB ICX) to clean the drains and water bodies in the urban poor settlement areas to maintain a sanitary environment by removing waste promptly. The project will be implemented with the participation of the community. The handing of the Backhoe Loader took place at Town Hall Green yesterday. Japanese Ambassador Akio Suda, handed over the key of the Backhoe Loader to Mayor of Colombo Prasanna Gunawardena. Health Department Officers of the Colombo Municipal Council were also present at the ceremony. Besides Colombo, the Government of Japan has provided assistance on numerous occasions for the improvement of sanitation. Garbage collection trucks valuing Yen 1.5 billion were provided to the Western Provincial Council in 1995 and 1997. Again in 2000, Yen 7.9 million was provided to the Municipal Council of Kandy for the improvement of Waste Management. |
