S. Korean labour officials arrive today

by P. Krishnaswamy

A three member team of South Korean Labour Ministry officials will arrive in Colombo today on a two day visit for a final assessment of arrangements being finalised by the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) to send skilled workers to S. Korea, under a bilateral agreement signed on June 1 between Labour Minister, Athauda Senaviratne and Korean human Resources and Labour Minister Tim Tae Hwan.

The team, during its two day visit, will focus on selection and recruitment of suitable candidates and prepare them for entry into Korea. The team comprising Deputy Directors Jung Eon-Kee, Chung Hae-Young and Assistant Deputy Director Woo Do-Yune will also study the operation of our computer systems with regard to screening of job-seekers, SLBFE sources said. For the current year, 4,000 eligible workers will be absorbed for jobs in S. Korea under the Work-Permit System, sources said, adding that a total of 27,000 applications were received in response to advertisements in the press and these applications have been processed and computerised. The S. Korean team will visit the Vocational Training Centre at Narahenpita, Textiles and Garments Centre at Ratmalana and the Animal Product and Health Department at Peradeniya, sources said.

The bilateral agreement signed between the two countries in Seoul holds prospects for the offer of lucrative jobs to about 5,000 to 10,000 Sri Lankan skilled workers and professionals in the IT, printing, construction, food manufacturing and services sector in S. Korea, SLBFE sources said.
