The Bar Association of Sri Lanka while unreservedly condemning an attempt by criminal elements to molest Balapitiya High Court Judge Mrs. Rohini Walgama has called on the IGP for immediate action to arrest the accused and produce them in Court. In a unanimous resolution the BASL has also urged the Police chief to take disciplinary action against the police officers for their failure to perform their duties while calling upon the Government to provide effective and suitable security to judicial officers to prevent a recurrence of such unsavoury incidents. The Resolution states, Whereas the Bar Association of Sri Lanka received information of the dastardly act of some Criminal elements attempting to enter the bedroom of Mrs. Rohini Walgama, Honourable High Court Judge of the Balapitiya and of attempting to molest her by threatening her with a knife. Whereas it was reported that when this reprehensible act took place, the officers on duty at the residence of the High Court Judge were asleep and failed to take action to arrest the suspects. Whereas the Bar Association is greatly perturbed at these events where it has been made difficult for Judges to perform their judicaial functions in situations lacking proper security and whereas they should be in a position to perform their functions free of any intimidation and harassment by anyone. The Bar Association of Sri Lanka unreservedly condemns this dastardly criminal act and requests the IGP to take immediate action to arrest the accused and produce them in Court, take disciplinary action against the police officers for their failure to perform their duties and request the government to provide effective and suitable security to the judaical officers to avoid such unsavoury incidents taking place again". |
