Lakmal Jayawardane in Ottawa The newly formed "Bandaranaike Center" in Canada, in honour of the world's first Woman Prime Minister Sirimavo Bandaranaike has taken steps to establish a scholarship fund to help Sri Lankan students who need financial support. The new scholarship fund was inaugurated on July 23, 2004 by Dr. Piyasena Hapuarchie, Sri Lankan Canadian academic. Dr. Hapuarchie offered two scholarships to Sri Lankan students from a rural area, in memory of his late parents. The new scholarship fund will be a joint project between Bandaranaike Center in Ottawa and Sugathasasanodaya Samithya in Ambalangoda. The Bandaranaaike Center will offer a scholarship in memory of Madam Bandaranaike which will be known as the "Madam Bandaranaike Memorial Scholarship", it will be given to a poor female students from Gampaha District,, who will study for a degree in "Computer Science" in a University. The Value of the scholarship will be Sri Lankan Rupees 50,000. The scholarship will be awarded every year starting from next year. The fund will offer two other scholarships in memory of Dr. Siripala Leelaratna, who was a well-known educationist who played a vital role in teaching Sinhala in China and Dr. Warnasena Rasaputram, former Governor of the Central Bank, diplomat and economist. |
