by our Parliament Correspondents Deputy Highways Minister T. B. Ekanayake told Parliament yesterday that a proper investigation will be carried out as to how exorbitant salaries of Rs. 44,000 was paid to 24 persons, including even UNP Pradeshiya Sabha members who had served as project officers of the Southern Highway. Replying to a supplementary question raised by UPFA MP Wimal Weerawansa during the oral questions session, the Deputy Minister said these 24 persons had been paid high salaries even violating the Government's recruitment procedures. "Apart from high salaries, these persons had been provided vehicles. It has also been revealed that they had been involved in political work full-time," Ekanayake said. He said these persons appointed on various former UNP ministers' requests had been attached to project offices in Panadura and Bandaragama. "We have already obtained a report from the director of the project. It has been found out that they have been employed violating the recruitment procedure," told Deputy Minister Ekanayake in his reply to an oral question raised by UNP MP T. Maheshwaran who questioned about the transfers and removal of officers attached to Highways Ministry after the present government assumed office. The Deputy Minister said a full report on this issue will be presented shortly. |
