by Bharatha Malawararachchi and Ranil Wijayapala Leader of the House and Minister Maithripala Sirisena told Parliament yesterday that action will be taken to make the Commission to investigate into the sudden demise of Ven. Gangodawila Soma Thera duly functional. He was replying to a question raised in the House yesterday by JHU member Ven. Athuraliye Rathana Thera. Ven. Rathana Thera said the Ven. Soma Thera's mother raised an objection to the appointment of one of the members of the commission. "What are the steps being taken to make the commission duly functional by the appointment of suitable members to the Commission?" the Thera asked. Sirisena said the member of the Commission of Inquiry against whom the objection has been lodged, is a retired Judge of the Supreme Court who has had 30 years experience in the Judicial Service. "No sufficient grounds have been so far adduced for the removal of the said member from the Commission," he added. However, the Minister assured that action will be taken to make the Commission duly functional on receipt of adequate and acceptable reasons for the removal of the member by the President. The Commission was appointed by the President on March 11, 2004 to inquire into and report on the circumstances relating to the sudden demise of Ven. Soma Thera. |
