Kingswood clinch Schools 'A' division league title

by Chris Dhambarage

Kingswood College Kandy became the first holders of the Singer inter school under 19 'A' division league rugby tournament when they defeated Isipatana in their final outing at the Bogambara Stadium in Kandy during the weekend.

The Kingswoodians also maintained their unbeaten record in the current season and pulled off the match by a convincing margin of 22 points to 11 points while scoring two goals, one try and one penalty. They lived upto their expectations with another magnificent performance where the forwards and the three quarters combined well to dominate the entire second half.

Even then their success was in the balance at one stage and were trailing 5-8 at half time. No doubt the pressure was on them because they were the favourites and managed to score only a solitary try during the first thirty minutes of play. But they settled down to play with a better understanding in the second half and proved that they are a true champion side at the end.

The Kingswoodians would certainly remember this effort for a long time because they started the season as the underdogs and the odds were heavily against them. They were up against the defending champions Royal in their very first game of the tournament. But they came out with flying colours and performed extremely well to force a ten all draw.

This result no doubt went a long way because had they lost the match they would have really struggled to outpoint their closest rivals Royal College and Wesley College.

In fact their success over the traditional rivals Wesley too was a turning point considering the fact that they had to play this game in Colombo. But they cleared each and every hurdle in their own style and eventually finished with five victories from six outings.

Joes win 'B' division title

St. Joseph's College annexed the Singer inter school under 19 'B' division league title when they outplayed Prince of Wales College Moratuwa in their final outing at Havelock Park last week.

The Josephians completed their task quite easily and won the game by 35 points to seven points while collected their points from five goals and conceding just a solitary goal to their opponents. They were of course assured of the league title even before the game started as the Cambrians had nothing to prove this season and were placed last in the points table.

Their toughest game was against the traditional rivals St. Peter's College played in the previous week where they figured in a thrilling 18 all draw. This game was probably the turning point because had they lost then they would have really struggled to outpoint their closest rivals St. Peter's College.

Wesley beat Ananda

Wesley College overcame their final hurdle in the Singer inter school under 19 'A' division league rugby tournament when they beat a fighting Ananda outfit by 25 points to 20 points in their match played at Longden Place.

The Wesleyites turned the game in their favour with a superb second half rally while collecting their points from two goals, one try and two penalties. Even then they went through some real anxious moments and came under tremendous pressure especially during the first 30 minutes of play.

But they got their act together well in the second half and powered their way through their heavy set of forwards to outclass the Anandians during the latter stages of the game. The Wesleyites eventually finished in the third place of the points table behind the champions Kingswood College Kandy and last year's champions Royal College.

However Wesley will be somewhat disappointed with the final outcome because they had a highly talented side with them and also made the best start to the current inter school rugby season. They lost their rhythm mid way in the season and a couple defeats at the hands of Royal and their traditional rivals Kingswood College Kandy put them out of contention.

In contrast the Anandians will be more than satisfied with their performances because they finished in the fourth place of the points table ahead of some of the more fancied teams like S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia, St. Anthony's College Kandy and Isipatana College. The Anandians also collected an extra bonus point from their last outing while going down within a margin of five points.

Trinity down St. Peter's

Trinity College, Kandy warmed up for next weeks all important Bradby Shield match against Royal College when they beat St. Peter's College, Bambalapitiya by 38 points to 12 points in their inter school rugby match played at the Trinity College Rugby Stadium at Pallekelle last week.

This was a fantastic effort considering the fact that the Peterites had a more superior line up on paper and were also fresh after a successful season in the 'B' division tournament. But the Trinitians rose to the big occasion as they have done in the past and turned the game in their favour scoring four goals and two tries.

There were some doubts whether they could pull off the game at one stage and the scores were level 12 all at half time. But the Trinitians rallied around through a superb team effort to rattle the Peterites in the second half and win the match by a more convincing margin at the end.

Thomians beat SACK

S. Thomas' College Mount Lavinia came out with a stupendous performance to beat St. Anthony's College Kandy by 22 points to 10 points in their annual fixture played at Havelock Park.

The Thomians who are going through a pretty ordinary season this year finally produced something exceptional to pull off a morale boosting win at the end.

Their success also had great significance because they won the Rev. Farther Angello Rosseti trophy which was on offer for the first time.
