480 competitors for National Run for Peace A record number of 480 competitors will take part in the National Run for Peace which will be worked off from September 24 to 26, 2004. It is being jointly organised by the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Asian German Sports Exchange programme. 40 runners each from 12 towns Jaffna, Puttalam, Kilinochchi, Trincomalee, Vavuniya, Mannar, Galle, Matara, Ambalantota, Colombo, Marawila and Ampara will take part in the run and will converge in Kandy where the closing ceremony will take place at the Bogambara Stadium on September 26. The runners will stop at three or four towns on the 12 different routes where the people of those respective towns will join the run in a symbolic gesture. The National Run for Peace is being organised to support Sri Lanka's peace process and to bring about goodwill and understanding between Sri Lanka's three main communities. It is being organised by the District Sports organisers of the 12 towns and Anja Hermann from Germany and Juliette Schlegl from Cameroons both of whom are student volunteers of AGSEP. Hermann and Schlegl along with Stephanie Koenigsbuescher have already met the District Sports Officer of Anuradhapura M. Indrapala who has arranged for the runners from Vavuniya, Jaffna and Trincomalee to stay overnight at Anuradhapura, Mihintale and Habarana. The police officers of the three towns will provide dinner and breakfast for the runners. The media personnel covering the run too will be provided accommodation in Anuradhapura. |
