Rohan first to drive under one minute at Kotmale

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy sports corr. reporting from Kotmale Circuit

Maestro Rohan de Silva driving a Formula Ford Mobil Special became the holder of the new course record when he clocked 56.889 seconds at the Kotmale Speed Hill Climb 2004 organised by the Upcountry Motor Sports Club and worked off at Mawatura in Kotmale on Sunday under bright and Sunny conditions.

Rohan de Silva was the master of the day as he drove with a lot of gusto and was very comfortable at the Sharp Corners and Steep inclines. What is most remarkable in Rohan getting the fastest timing for the day was the fact that he achieved this in his Standard Ford Formula 3600 cc. But in his high powered modified Formula Mobil Special I he clocked 57.219 seconds which entered the record books as a new class record.

Rohan thrilled the crowds with his driving which was a class of his own and by securing wins in both Formula events he has established three records.

First he clocked 56.887 seconds to establish a class record for Standard Formula. Formula 3600 cc which at the end of the meet was declared as the fastest timing of the day and also the new course record.

The organisers UMSC by their Supplementary Regulation 12 have stipulated 'From the year 2004, course records and class records will be recorded and established as new records. All previous class and course records will be considered null and void as no proper records of such course records have been maintained.

Little master Arvinda Premadasa of Team Caltex driving a Mitsubishi EVO timed 57.091 seconds to establish a new class record for stock cars and also for Super Cars event between 1600 cc and 3500 cc. His timing was a fraction of a second slower than the course record established by Rohan de Silva. In second place was Nishan Weerasooria timing 57.961 secs.

The Standard Ford Formula event saw apart from Rohan de Silva, two other drivers clocking under a minute. Romani de Silva 57.317 secs and Dinesh Jayawardena 57.672 seconds with a little less than a second separating the first three which will give some indication of the closeness of the battle.

Dhammika Peiris of Team Caltex stole the show for the lesser powered cars when he won three events and all three being class records. His first win was in his Caltex Laser when he timed 1.089 minutes in the event for over 12 kg/hp cars. Next he timed 1.050 minutes in his Ferio Caltex in the 10 to 12 kg/hp event. His third win was on the SLN Laser event when he recorded a timing of 1.105 minutes in his Caltex Laser. Creating three separate records in the same meet is quite an achievement as he had done this before at the St. James Hill Climb held in 2001.

Young Ishraq Wahab son of the famous Cassim Wahab walked away with a class record by timing 1.050 minutes in his Mobil Honda Civic in the event for motor cars 8-10 kg/hp. His elder brother Javidh Wahab representing the Team Caltex too established a new class record with a timing of 1.008 minutes in his Caltex Honda in the event for Cars SL-A 1400 cc to 1600 cc. Pappa Cassim Wahab should be a proud person as he had thrust the intricacies of motor racing to his two sons.

Rohan Dhammapala from the hill capital making his maiden appearance at Kotmale came up with a stunning performances when he outstripped many seasoned campaigners by winning the event for Modified Cars 1050 cc to 1400 cc in his newly acquired Rohan's Honda City with a timing of 1.081 minutes and he also established a new class record.

Dinesh too established a new class for the 6 to 8 kg/hp event with a timing of 1.013 minutes in his Mobil Honda V Tee.

Ramzi Ahamed established a new record in special open event in his Ram Shing Shot with a timing of 1.045 minutes.

These was just a solitary mishap when Nihal Premasiri ran off the track in his Honda Civic.

These were no motor cycle events.
