Port Policy would be introduced soon - Mangala Samaraweera

A Port Policy to develop all commercial ports around the country would be introduced soon to further develop the port sector in Sri Lanka, said Minister of Ports, Aviation, Information and Media and Deputy Minister of Education Mangala Samaraweera yesterday in Colombo.

Minister Samaraweera addressing the 25th anniversary of Sri Lanka Ports Authority said that the policy would adopt accommodating international trends, local and regional needs to make Sri Lanka a strategic marine hub in the region.

The Colombo South Port Development Program, Galle Port improvement plan and setting up of ports in Hambantota and Oluvil would soon commence. "Regional ports in the North and East and its environs would also be undertaken. The Sri Lanka Ports Authority would also be further developed to ensure productivity and efficiency that would be a turnaround in Sri Lanka's marines sector", he said.

Minister Samaraweera also expressed his whole-hearted commitment that the ports sector is vital to develop the economy of Sri Lanka.

With technological advances, global changes and economic advances in countries around the world, the Ministry of Ports and Aviation would devise strategies to attract more vessels to the country", he said. Chairman of the Ports Authority, Dileepa Wijesundera said that the Sri Lanka Ports Authority is fully geared to adapt to the changes of the future with a determination to stay at the top of the region and to gain international recognition.

The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) was set up by an Act of Parliament in 1979 and administers and operates all specified commercial Ports in Sri Lanka. The specified Ports now include Colombo, Galle, Trincomalee, Kankesanthurai and Point Pedro. The Port of Colombo being the premier Port in the country has naturally become the focal point of all port development activities in Sri Lanka since the formation of the SLPA.

However, as a consequent of the Government policy to develop the regional areas in the country. The SLPA attaches equal emphasis on the development of the ports of Galle, Trincomalee, Kankesanthurai, Point Pedro and a new Port at Hambantota and Oluvil.

The SLPA aims to provide a conducive policy environment to consolidate and further develop port activities to internationally acceptable standards for Sri Lanka to be a competitive shipping centre in the South Asian region."
