by Bharatha Malawaraarachchi While a Ministerial inquiry against the Directress of the Medical Research Institute is in progress the Government Medical Officers Association(GMOA) also fired its own salvo calling upon the authorities to remove her from the post until completion of the inquiry. The GMOA yesterday alleged that due to the inefficiency of the MRI Directress, the institute had failed to render the anticipated service to the country as a whole. "We have now initiated an inquiry against the MRI Director on the grounds of inefficiency and there are a large number of complaints against her, a Senior Ministry official told the Daily News yesterday. He said complaints against the Directress concerned had come from consultants and specialists."Based on the inquiry, we will be taking a further course of action," he added. The GMOA said the MRI was now in a pathetic state. "The MRI has been rendering yeoman service as a reference centre for virological studies. But it is sad to note that it has now failed to conduct proper studies regarding viral diseases such as dengue, hydrophobia etc", GMOA's Secretary Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya told the Daily News. He explained that inefficiency of the MRI's head has created a severe crisis in the institution."As a result, this research institution itself is not in a position to cope with the outbreak of diseases countrywide." Dr. Padeniya said in the past, the MRI had been producing culture plates necessary for Anti-Biotic Sensitivity Tests (ABST)."Now the MRI has stopped manufacturing these plates and it has to purchase them from private companies at higher prices." The GMOA is now urging the authorities to at least temporary remove the particular person from the Director Post of the MRI in order to hold an impartial inquiry and also to avoid bias and embarrassments as this is an inquiry against a Head of Department. |
