by Florence Wickramage A Water Revolution with Community Support emphasising specially on water supply to rural areas has become the need of the hour. As such the Urban Development and Water Supply Ministry has activated a Rs. 77 million community water supply project covering 545 Grama Niladhari divisions, Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said. Minister Gunawardena on Sunday, August 1, commissioned the Rs. 1,318,000 Miriyagolla-Kandewatte Community Water Supply Scheme in Hanwella. The community's contribution to the scheme amounted to Rs. 1,08,000. The Minister emphasised that development and water were intertwined. Therefore, community participation is important to conserve water resources to meet any imminent water problems such as drought that may occur in the future. Shortage of water could become a third world problem which would require precautionary measures to be adopted well in advance to face such a situation. The Ministry's water revolution is aimed at conserving specially the water resources such as wells, water springs ponds, tanks and waterways in the villages with community participation. The people's strength in the Water Revolution will be the supporting factor which will ensure that the country's water-resources will be preserved and protected for future generations, Minister Gunawardena said. |
