by Sanjaya Asela The allocation of Rs. 3.2 million out of the Presidential Fund was a magnanimous gesture of President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga towards the 'pitisara devalayas' to buttress the expenses incurred in observing the rituals of the Kandy Esala Perahera and it clearly illustrates her dedication to protect the cultural heritage of Sri Lanka, Kandy Sri Vishnu Devalaya Basnayaka Nilame Mohan Panabokke said. The President made the donation to the Devala Development and Conservation Fund on the occasion of officially presenting the traditional communication (sannasa) of successful conclusion of the Kandy Esala Perahera. The donation is made to ease the financial strain on the 'pitisara devalayas' to perform religious rites parallel to the Kandy Esala Perahera. Panabokke said that as the Head of State the President was seriously concerned about the financial drawbacks the "Pitisara Devalayas" experience to perform the age-old observances parallel to the Kandy Esala Perahera and accordingly she took steps to create a special Fund for the " Pitisara Devalayas". During the past ten years she had also taken steps to establish the Up-country Artistes' Foundation on the initiative of Central Province Governor,in order to sustain the cultural heritage for the benefit of the future generation, he said. |
