Govt allocates Rs. 2.5 b for highways

The Government will allocate Rs. 2.5 billion for the maintenance of highways in 2005. Road Development Authority (RDA) Chairman M.M.C. Ferdinando told the Daily News that the Cabinet has approved the allocation which is three-fold the amount allocated for highways maintenance this year.

"This year the RDA received only Rs 800 million for maintaining the roads which is not adequate given the condition of our highways. But the new Government under Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapakse's guidance has decided to pay greater attention to our highways sector," he said.

The Chairman said the new funds to be spent on keeping the country's highways in good condition, would create a large number of employment opportunities and also revive small and medium scale industries related to road development. Meanwhile, the RDA yesterday launched a special program for the immediate renovation of the country's road network at an estimated cost of Rs 500-800 million.

Under the four month program expected to be concluded by the end of this year, all A and B highways will be brought up to a motorable condition while taking special measures to improve the drainage system.

"No tenders were called since we had decided to use our own labour for this project. The officials have been provided with all physical resources and instructions to achieve the program's objective," Ferdinando said.
