Kandy has the edge over CH and FC

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy Sports Correspondent

Now that the dust has settled on the dispute on the date of playing the match, it will be once again back to the rugby field when the defending Caltex League Champions Kandy Sports Club take on the challengers CH & FC in a key Caltex League second round match to be played today July 31st (Full Moon Poya Day) at the Mittawela Rugby Stadium in Kandy at 5 p.m.

For all intents and purposes Kandy Sports Club have won the Caltex League championship for the sixth year in running as they have a clear 10.50 lead over their nearest rivals in the table of points and they could afford to forego points in their next two outings but still keep the trophy..

A win in this match will not only consolidate their position at the top of the table of points but also win a battle which has been made more prestigious off the field following the events during the week when the two clubs were seen in a scrum down over the date of the match.

Kandy finally agreed to play this match on the Full Moon Poya Day despite all the inconveniences to them and the spectators as this date coincides with the final perahera the Randoli which is the biggest and the grandest religious and cultural event in the hill capital.

Kandy has been experiencing a little rain during the last couple of days which has made the ground green and soft and an exciting evenings play is in store, for the spectators who are expected to throng in their numbers in spite of the rush which is expected in Kandy on this date.

Kandy Sports Club will go into this match without Dilip Selvam and Nalaka Weerakoddy while second row forward Neranjan Ranasinghe will be a doubtful starter if he has not recovered from the injury he sustained in the match against Army two weeks ago which required three stitches.

But overall Kandy is playing well at present this is evident from the resounding wins they scored over Havelocks SC, Army SC and the Police SC in their second round match. They will have a psychological advantage over their opponents by virtue of their first round win over CH & FC earlier this month.

Their two West Samoan players No. 8 Tavita 'Laga' Tulagese who is also the coach of the side and fullback Uaelasi Faataua are in fine form at present and Kandy will look to them for another blistering performance.

Their three quarters made up of Sanjeewa Jayasinghe, Indrajith Bandaranayake, Pradeep Liyanage, Radhika Hettiarachchi have been playing well and capable of tearing into any defence.
