DIG orders probe into police threat on journalists

by Asela Kuruluwansa

Central Range DIG Nimal Mediwaka has ordered an investigation into a complaint made by a group of journalists alleging that the ASP of Walapane abused them and threatened to smash their cameras and other equipment while they were covering the Randoli Perahera in Kandy on Tuesday night.

The journalists in their complaint had stated that the ASP concerned asked them to move away from the spot where they were covering the perahera saying they were obstructing the view of the Maha Sangha seated in the Maha Maluwa of the Sri Dalada Maligawa.

When the journalists asked the Maha Sangha if they were obstructing their view the Maha Sangha had answered in the negative.

Thereafter they informed the ASP concerned that the Maha Sangha was not opposed to their presence there but the ASP lambasted them and threatened to break their cameras if they did not move away despite their showing him the official accreditation card signed by Central Province DIG and the Diyawadana Nilame.

DIG Mediwaka has directed Kandy SSP E. M. Gunatilleke to investigate into the complaint and submit a report to him.
