Two more child and youth centres opened by Nadira Gunatilleke Two more Child and Youth Centres set up by the National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) were opened at Seenigama and Weligma recently. The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) commenced the project to set up Child and Youth Centres countrywide with World Bank assistance. These centres were set up to protect, educate and entertain children during the day when left alone at their homes. Special attention i.e. being paid to street and male children. Any child below 18 can visit these centres. The NCPA manages and monitor these centres. Teachers have already been trained to employ in these centres. Equipment worth Rs. 400,000 including different musical instruments, equipment for indoor games such as chess, sewing machines, computers, television, radio, video and other electric appliances, kitchen utensils, provide for each centre. The NCPA has made arrangements to train teachers and educate them on different subjects. It also monitors teacher training programs. The Child and Youth Centres provide education, vocational training on producing handicrafts, fabric painting and printing. The centres have been placed under the supervision of teachers who have wide knowledge on the above subjects. The first centre of this project was in Pettah and the second centre was opened at Uswetakeyiyawa. |
