Japanese help for Lanka's irrigation sector by Uditha Kumarasinghe Japan has pledged financial assistance and technical expertise to the Government towards its attempts to develop the country's irrigation sector. A delegation from the Tokyo Power Supply Service International Institute which recently called on Agriculture, Lands and Irrigation Deputy Minister Bimal Ratnayake has confirmed that Japan would provide aid and assistance to the Government to implement irrigation development schemes in Sri Lanka. Ratnayake told the Daily News that the four member delegation comprising Yoshiyo Yoshida and Hideki Takaha of the Overseas Project Office of the Tokyo Power Supply Service International Institute had extensive discussions with him on the existing situation relating to the country's irrigation sector. The delegation which laid key emphasis on the Uma Oya Development Project has pointed out to the Deputy Minister on the importance of formulating all irrigation development projects within Sri Lanka. They have also pledged to provide all design plans of the irrigation projects prepared by their institute to the Irrigation Ministry. The Deputy Minister has told the delegation that in addition to the project implemented to renovate 10,000 tanks, the Irrigation Ministry has planned to implement 22 irrigation development projects. Arrangements have also been made to launch several large scale water supply schemes in Moneragala and Hambantota districts to provide water facilities to these districts. Ratnayake has also pointed out to the delegation that the Government has accorded priority to implement several hydro power projects close to Uma Oya. The Government will shortly implement these development plans by taking into consideration the country's requirements. |
