Final Randoli Perahera tonight

by S. M. Jiffrey Abdeen - Kandy South group correspondent

The third of the five Randoli Peraheras of Kandy's Esala Maha Perahera paraded the streets of Kandy City on Thursday night attracting a very large crowd.

This perahera with a larger number of elephants took a longer route which enabled a larger crowd to witness this pageant.

As usual people stood on the streets from forenoon braving the weather as they did not want to take the risk of moving out of the places occupied by them along the lake bund and the pavements for the fear of losing them.

By late afternoon the streets were chock a block as people flocked this hill capital in private vans and buses, public transport and trains which ran packed. By evening many found it even difficult to enter the streets of Kandy.

The final Randoli Perahera is tonight (Saturday - July 31st) the procession joined by the Peraheras of the four Devales - Kataragama, Natha, Vishnu and Pattini will leave the Sri Dalada Maligawa Square at 8.30 p.m. facing the south and it will proceed through Dalada Veediya (Ward Street), Yatinuwara Veediya (Brownrigg Street), Kande Veediya (Hill Street), D. S. Senanayake Veediya (Trincomalee Street), and turn off at Raja Veediya (King's Street) and return to the Dalada Maligawa Square.

The day perahera will be held on Sunday - August 1 and will leave the Maligawa Square at 1.55 p.m. and will take the traditional route.

The water cutting ceremony will take place at Gatambe in the early hours of Sunday August 1 at 1.45 a.m. according to the traditional rites.
