Jobs in Thailand for Lankans

President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga succeeded in obtaining employment for Sri Lankan academics such as engineers, scientists and English teachers in Thailand.

This is subsequent to the President on an official visit to Thailand to attend the first BIMST-EC Summit, meeting Prime Minister Takshin Shinawatra at the Government House in Bangkok yesterday for a bilateral meeting.

The Prime Minister told President Kumaratunga that Thailand will offer jobs to Sri Lankan 'knowledge-workers.'

The two leaders agreed that they should now give leadership to broadening and deepening the bilateral relations.

During their discussions, the two leaders agreed to forge ahead with a number of measures further strengthening the close bilateral relations between the two countries including sharing of Thailand's experiences in rural development, agriculture, fisheries, promotion of low-cost air services, and investment.

President Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Shinawatra discussed the potential for increasing tourist traffic among the countries in the region, particularly pilgrim travel.

Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar has already made progress in this area by succeeding to invite two low cost airline operators from Thailand to fly to Sri Lanka. The Thai airline officials will be in Sri Lanka next month to peruse the proposal.

Director General Policy Research and Information Unit Media, Eric Fernando said President Kumaratunga conveyed the Government's desire to revitalise and restructure the agriculture and fisheries sectors in Sri Lanka.

"Considering the expertise that Thailand has in these sectors and on the President's request, the Thai Prime Minister agreed to provide technical assistance to meet the needs and requirements of Sri Lanka," he said.

President Kumaratunga and Prime Minister Shinawatra also discussed their governments' policies to uplift the rural economy and small and medium enterprises (SMEs). Prime Minister Shinawatra offered to share the experience of Thailand in projects and programs particularly targeted to uplift the rural sector.

Foreign Minister Kadirgamar, Agriculture Minister Anura Dissanayake, Fisheries Minister Chandrasena Wijesinghe, Ambassador of Sri Lanka in Thailand J.D.A. Wijewardene and senior officials were associated with the President at the official talks.

Foreign Minister Kadirgamar signed the agreements on Information Technology and Mutual Assistance on Criminal Matters, the Ministers of Agriculture and Fisheries signed the agreements on agriculture and fisheries.

Sri Lankan Ambassador in Thailand signed the MOU between the Boards of Investment of Sri Lanka and Thailand

Following agreements and MOUs were signed yesterday: Agreement on Bilateral Cooperation in Fisheries between the Government of Sri Lanka and the Government of Thailand; MoU on Agricultural Cooperation between the Governments of Sri Lanka and Thailand; MoU between the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of Sri Lanka and the Ministry of Agriculture of Cooperative of Thailand on Cooperation on the Application of Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures; MoU between the Governments of Sri Lanka and Thailand on Cooperation in Information Technology and Services; MoU between the BOI of Sri Lanka and the BOI of Thailand on Cooperation relating to Investment Matters; and treaty between Sri Lanka and Thailand on Mutual Legal Assistance on Criminal Matters.
