Public will be kept informed of peace talks, final agreement - Ratnasiri

The final result of the peace talks will be fully communicated to the public, Public Security, Law and Order Minister and Deputy Defence Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake pledged yesterday.

"The Government has no intention of hiding the progress of peace talks and the final settlement which both parties will agree upon will be communicated to the public," Deputy Minister said in his first inspection tour to Sri Lanka Air Force Base at Katunayake.

The Deputy Minister said the Government will hold peace talks with the LTTE focused in reaching lasting peace and a final solution to North-East conflict where both are inter-dependant and cannot be isolated from one another.

Although the Government has played a dedicated and patient role in the peace process, the LTTE had on several times deviated from the peace process. Both parties should play their role responsibly, the Minister said.

Condemning the recent incident in Kottawa, the Minister said it will never be a blessing to the peace process. "In the name of humanity, we condemn armed groups killing their rivals."

The Minister also said he was impressed when he saw the way Air Force officers maintaining their base well.

The Minister first visited the No 4 Helicopter Squadron accompanied by the Air Force Commander Air Marshall Donald Perera and praised the officers for maintaining high standards in aircraft repairing which had saved a considerable amount of foreign currency for Sri Lanka.

The Air Force Base Commander Air Commodore S. Somaratne, Director of the Aeronautical Engineering Air Vice Marshall Lal Perera and Wing Commander, O.F.H.V. Fernando also participated in the inspection tour.
