BoC's super cycle tour attracts over 150 riders

Bank of Ceylon which celebrates its 65th anniversary has organised a super racing cycle tour to be worked off on July 31 (Saturday) and August 1. (Sunday). The Interim Committee headed by DIG K. P. P. Pathirana has been vested with the task of conducting the event according to international standards.

The tour which is an open event has already attracted over 150 riders from all parts of the country who are registered with the sport's governing body. These entries received are from 24 registered clubs and unattached riders who are competing as teams of four and above.

According to Chairman of Interim Committee all riders will be provided with all facilities. Cash awards amounting to Rs. 350,000 will be distributed among winners said Pathirana. The winner will go away Rs. 50,000, while the two runners-up are to receive Rs. 30,000 and 20,000 respectively. Meanwhile there will be special awards for Best Hill Climber, and Best Sprinter on both days.

He also stated that this cycle tour will have the new rule implemented in Sri Lanka pertaining to the feeding. Presently the international rule allows the riders to be fed after 50 kilometres according to their needs. This will be introduced in Sri Lanka for the first time he said.

The first leg of the tour which covers a distance of 163.7 kilometres is scheduled to commence on July 31 Saturday at 7 a.m. opposite Bank of Ceylon headquarters. The organisers request the riders to be present at 6.30 a.m. on this day.

On Friday July 30 the organisers will brief the team managers at 2 p.m. at the Bank's auditorium and at 4 p.m. they hope to brief the judges and tour commissars at the same venue and will hand over the numbers to participants.

The riders who face the starter on Saturday will ride through Borella, Peliyagoda, Wattala, Kandana, Ja-Ela, Negombo, Kochchikade, Chilaw and pass through Hettipola to reach Kurunegala to finish this leg, around 12 noon.

On the second leg cyclists who face the starters flag around 12 noon will pedal through Pothuhera, Polgahawela, Ambepussa to reach the Kandy Road and proceed to Galigamuwa and reach Ruwanwella before arriving at Avissawella from where they will come to the finishing line on the High Level Road. At Thimbirigasyaya they will go through Dickman's road to enter the Galle Road and pass through Bambalapitiya and Kollupitiya to finish at Galle Face Green.

A thrilling racing cycle event could be witnessed by the sports loving public on both days of the race.

In the meantime the police has taken measures to minimise the traffic block during the race.
