Lankan netballers lose again by Bernard Perera Sri Lanka suffered its second successive defeat when they lost to Malaysia 38 points to 60 in the 4th Asian Youth Netball Championship match at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, yesterday. Malaysia got off to a flying start in the first quarter scoring 18 points while the hosts could manage only 8 points. This gap was too much for Sri Lanka to fight back minus their star shooter and skipper Gishanthi Jayakody. The second quarter saw the visitors extend their lead further scoring 13 points against Sri Lanka's 9 points. Lankans passes was not up to expectations, this was the main cause for the hosts to lose the game. Their long range passes were never collected properly. Lankan lasses started well in the third quarter collecting four points in the first few minutes but this was not sufficient to close the gap as the Malaysians attacked well to put a halt to Lankan scoring. They collected as many as 18 points to Lankans 7 points. The lead extending to 23 points. Lankans came to the final session with a huge deficit and went all out to make a match of it. But the visitors were troubled by this act as their lead was enough for them to relax. This session saw a total of 23 points scored by both teams with Sri Lanka's best scoring coming with 12 points to Malaysia's 11. This quarter was the only quarter that Lankans led. Today Sri Lanka meet Singapore which will decide the finalists for the final day, Friday July 30. |
