Japanese Peace Boat to call at Colombo The Japanese Peace Boat, which will be calling in Colombo shortly, is a new approach to peace education. It is based on the concept of bringing together from all countries young people who have an interest in peace and cross cultural understanding so that they will interact with each other and by learning about each other's experiences in different countries be able to make a more useful contribution to the uplift of their own. The Weeramantry International Centre for Peace Education and Research (WICPER) is dedicated to the concept of furthering peace education and has numerous programs aimed at bringing peace oriented subjects to the attention of all children so that they will have a better understanding of each other's problems, backgrounds and ideas for achieving a peaceful world. Through a partnership arrangement between the Peace Boat and WICPER, a program has been evolved to enable some of our most service oriented young people to make a greater contribution to peace and social welfare, through interaction with likeminded young people across the world. The Peace Boat is a floating University of Peace and WICPER is participating with it in spreading Peace Education. WICPER has arranged for four students representative of the four component groups of Sri Lankan society to join this Peace Boat voyage. They are Mr. Niran Anketell, Miss Suzanna Beling, Mr. Sheamal Samarasekera and Miss Shahina Zahir - all of whom have shown a keen interest in social work. They all have combined their interests in scholarly and sporting activities with service oriented projects and are all currently pursuing different courses leading to University Degrees. WICPER has also made arrangements for Rohan Edirisingha, a lecturer at the Faculty of Law of the University of Colombo to give a series of lectures on board. Judge C. G. Weeramantry will be delivering a series of lectures on Peace to the whole compliment of passengers, who are of all varying ages and are interested in the pursuit of peace. The Sri Lankan participants will join the Peace Boat in Singapore and sail on it to Colombo on July 30th. This is a pioneering venture in cooperation between this world-renowned project and Sri Lanka and many more voyages of the Peace Boat will take place. |
