Fast track development for 14 under-developed Colombo schools

While accelerating rural school development through the Navodya project and Central School revival program, the Education Ministry has also taken steps to upgrade selected under-developed schools in the big cities where there is a rush to gain admission to popular schools.

Cities like Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Kurunegala and Kegalle and Matara have been identified.

This year, 14 under-developed, medium sized schools in Colombo have been targeted for fast-track development, an Education Ministry release said.

These schools, once upgraded are expected to cater to the overflow from the popular schools in Colombo for 2005 admissions. Some popular schools have about 4,500 applications for just 400 Grade 1 places.

The Ministry is spending from the Consolidated Fund and the special donor funded projects for this program.
